This is a proposed project of a full, comprehensive Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies home video collection on blu ray disc. The collection's approach is similar to Walt Disney Treasures, completely character-centered.

This is an individual hobby made for fun.

I haven't done a list of possible extra material of this hypothetical project. Only the list of shorts.

Discs would have around 13-24 shorts each.

Even the bonus shorts would be restored.

The exact release dates in these lists may be wrong, because they've been taken from Wikipedia. Nonetheless, the release order is correct!

I don't mean to be harsh, but I'm not accepting suggestions. Not because I don't like suggestions, but because the possibilities are simply endless and I don't feel like considering them, it's pretty impossible. If someone edits these pages, I'm gonna see only a couple of weeks later, and then undo the edits. Many other animation fans also have done a similar thing - i.e., designing Looney Tunes collections. So if you're a fan like me I'd encourage you to design your own collection, because it's very subjective.

Note about the bonus shorts

My original idea was that the bonus shorts should work like bonus tracks of music albums: a character's collection should comprise all of his appearances, plus cameo appearances and prototypes related to the character.

This approach is great if we think about standalone collections: if someone is only interested in Tweety and Sylvester, for example, the Tweety collection would include all of Tweety & Sylvester, all of Tweety, all of Granny, and all Tweety cameo appearances!

However, considering the whole collection, this approach led to the repetition of too many films. There were 64 cartoons appearing twice and 4 appearing 3 times - totalling 72 repetitions for 68 shorts.

It was too much! I wanted to follow Walt Disney Treasures approach, however in that collection there are only 5 duplicated shorts between regular character volumes, not counting 13 duplicates in the WWII volume (that consists of mostly duplicates). So, I've decided to abandon the "Bonus Shorts" approach and eliminate duplications in regular (non-bonus) shorts except for a few cases. The old listings with bonus shorts are available via the page histories.

The duplicates have been reduced to: 19 shorts appearing twice and 1 appearing 3 times - totalling 21 repetitions for 20 shorts.

The only collections that include bonus shorts are Bugs and Daffy, comprising all appearances of their prototype versions.

Hierarchy of characters

There is a lot of crossover in Looney Tunes films. I had to adopt some sort of hierarchy, as if some character's series contained each other:

  • No collection includes minor (cameo) appearances of the character.
  • The Bugs Bunny collection comprehends all his solo shorts, plus 5 appearances as a prototype.
  • The Daffy Duck collection comprehends all his shorts, excluding the ones with Bugs Bunny (that's 15 cartoons) and his pairings with Speedy Gonzales in the 1960s (that's 26 cartoons), plus 2 appearances as a smaller, unnamed version of himself.
  • The Porky Pig collection comprehends all his shorts, excluding the ones with Bugs, Daffy and Sylvester. I've included the first 4 pairings with Daffy because they were before the creation of the "Porky & Daffy" title card, thus being part of the original Porky series. From that title card on, the focus of the studio shifted to the duo and later to the duck. The collection also comprehends the initial run of the post-Harman-Ising LT series, where Beans was intended to be the main character.
  • The Sylvester collection comprehends all his shorts, excluding the ones with Tweety and Speedy.
  • The Tweety & Sylvester collection comprehends all Tweety shorts, of which only in the first 3 he isn't paired with Sylvester.
  • The Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner collection comprehends all shorts of both characters, excluding the ones where the Coyote tries to catch Bugs Bunny.
  • The Foghorn Leghorn collection comprehends all his shorts, plus the first and fourth appearances of Henery Hawk, when he was intended to be the main character of the chickenhawk plots.
  • The Elmer Fudd collection comprehends all 12 Egghead shorts, and all Elmer shorts excluding the ones with Bugs, Daffy and Sylvester, except "A Corny Concerto" where he is the host of the concert.
  • The Speedy Gonzales collection comprehends all Speedy shorts except the ones with Daffy in the 1960s.
  • The Pepé Le Pew collection comprehends all his shorts.
  • The Daffy & Speedy collection comprehends all their pairings in the 1960s.
  • The Bosko collection comprehends all his shorts.
  • The Buddy collection comprehends all his shorts, including one Merrie Melody he starred in ("Mr. and Mrs. Is the Name").

All-Stars

The "All-Stars" volumes would comprehend short-lived characters that have starred in at least 2 cartoons or starred in 1 cartoon while appearing in others, excluding the characters introduced in the W-7 Arts era.

This objectively led to: Yosemite Sam, Ralph Wolf & Sam Sheepdog, The Three Bears, The Goofy Gophers, Sniffles, Charlie Dog, Ralph Phillips, Claude Cat, Hubie & Bertie, Marc Anthony & Pussyfoot, Inki, Beaky Buzzard, Jose & Manuel, Willoughby, Conrad the Cat, The Two Curious Puppies, Little Blabbermouse, The Honey-Mousers, A. Flea, The Drunk Stork, The "Supreme Cat", Dodsworth, Bobo the Elephant, and Babbit & Catstello.

In addition, I've selected one-shots to fill remaining space, personal "best-of" choices:

  • the all-time-greatest "One Froggy Evening" and "The Dover Boys";
  • the Academy-Award nominated shorts "High Note", "Nelly's Folly", "Now Hear This";
  • the cartoon that McKimson made pratically single-handedly: "The Hole Idea" (referred to in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit");
  • arguably the greatest one-shot effort by Freleng in the 1950s: "Three Little Bops";
  • "Martian Through Georgia" because... Well, don't have a good excuse for this one except because I remember the Martian :D

W-7 Arts and the remaining one-shots

I've decided to group the W-7 Arts characters, like Cool Cat and Merlin the Magic Mouse, together with the few remaining one-shots from the 1960s, chronologically.

The remaining one-shots from the 1950s are all the other shorts not included in any character collection or all-stars, in chronological order.

In the 1940s, the Merrie Melodies becomes indistinguishable from Looney Tunes in 1943, when Looney Tunes switched to color permanently. However, it wasn't a sudden change: the two series were already losing their differences gradually prior to 1943.

Because this collection is character-centered, the most relevant difference between the two series is that the Looney Tunes always featured the main recurrent character, while one-shots were always released in the Merrie Melodies series (altough Merrie Melodies also featured recurring characters since its first short).

Therefore, for this collection, the most relevant turning point is when both series lost this specific distinction, i.e., when both series started to feature recurring characters as well as one-shots. This turning point happens to be Tex Avery's "The Haunted Mouse", released Feb 15, 1941. This is the first Looney Tunes one-shot. From this cartoon onwards, the Looney Tunes series started to feature one-shots, while Merrie Melodies kept featuring both one-shots and recurring characters.

"The Classic Merrie Melodies" are chronological sets that comprehend all Foxy Merrie Melodies, the Merrie Melody that Buddy starred in ("Mr. and Mrs. Is the Name"), Porky's debut ("I Haven't Got A Hat"), "Old Glory" and all one-shots prior to "The Haunted Mouse". "The 1940s" comprehends the one-shots starting from "The Haunted Mouse" chronologically until 1949.

Aborted volumes

Porky & Daffy I gave up distinguishing Daffy Duck series from Porky & Daffy series. Omitting the Porky & Daffy cartoons would be detrimental to a Daffy chronological collection. Daffy is to Porky Pig what Bugs is to Elmer. We can perfectly fuse the Porky+Daffy cartoons to the Daffy Duck series because the duck actually overshadows the pig in all of them. I double-dipped only 4 cartoons that predate the "Porky and Daffy" title card. So, only the Bugs+Daffy pairings are omitted from the Daffy collection, to avoid double-dipping 15 films, as well as the Daffy & Speedy shorts of the 1960s.
Hippety Hopper & Sylvester Jr. It doesn't make sense to distinguish between Sylvester and "Hippety Hopper+Sylvester Jr.". There are many cartoons where only Sylvester Jr. appears (without Hippety). There comes a point in the 1950s where the Sylvester universe becomes indistinguishable from "Sylvester Jr.+Hippety" universe.
